Timber cladding should be installed as part of a ventilated system, allowing for airflow behind the boards and drainage of moisture. Installation should take account of the selected profile, timber type and exposure conditions to ensure consistent performance.
All timber cladding installations should follow a number of core principles to ensure reliable performance.
Maintain a ventilated cavity behind the cladding
Allow for drainage at the base of the wall
Ensure continuous airflow top and bottom
Fix boards to appropriate battens or substructure
Allow for natural timber movement
Maintain consistent spacing between boards
Spacing between boards is required to allow for movement and drainage. The required spacing will vary depending on the timber type, profile and installation method.
Consistent spacing across the façade is important to maintain alignment and visual quality.
Fixing method will depend on the selected cladding profile and design intent. Both face-fixed and secret-fixed systems may be used depending on the required appearance.
Fixings should be suitable for external use and selected to suit the timber species and environmental conditions.
Installation should take account of site conditions including exposure, orientation and moisture levels. Timber should be stored and handled correctly on site prior to installation to avoid damage or unnecessary movement.
Consideration should also be given to sequencing and protection during construction.
Where coatings are applied, installation should be completed in accordance with the coating system requirements. This will influence both the final appearance and ongoing maintenance of the cladding.
Uncoated timber will weather naturally over time, while coated systems will require periodic maintenance.
Project-specific installation guidance is available on request. This is provided based on the selected cladding system, profile and project requirements.
We work with architects, contractors and installers to ensure the cladding is installed correctly for both performance and appearance.
