Finishes

Finish and texture play a key role in how timber cladding looks, performs and weathers over time. From clean, smooth boards to brushed or charred surfaces, each finish creates a different visual effect and interacts differently with coatings and light.

Choosing a Finish

The choice of finish influences both the appearance of the façade and how it performs over time. Texture affects how light interacts with the surface, how coatings are absorbed, and how the timber weathers in exposed conditions.
Finishes are available across Avara™ Clear, Avara™ Prime and Avara™ Character, allowing a consistent design approach regardless of timber selection.

Barnwood Finish

Barnwood is a brushed finish that opens the grain of the timber to create a more textured, natural surface. The brushing process removes softer fibres, leaving a slightly worn appearance that adds depth and variation across the façade.

This texture improves coating absorption and can help finishes perform more consistently over time, particularly in exposed locations.

Rift Finish

Rift is a linear, saw-cut texture that runs along the width of the board. It creates subtle shadow lines across the surface, adding depth without heavily altering the natural character of the timber.

This finish works well in contemporary designs where a consistent but visually active surface is required.

Yakisugi Charred Finish

Yakisugi is a charred and brushed timber finish that creates a distinct surface with depth and variation. The appearance is driven by the charring process, with each board carrying its own natural pattern.

This finish is typically used where a darker, more architectural façade is required.

Avara™ clear smooth timber cladding

Smooth Finish

Smooth cladding provides a clean, planed surface with a more uniform appearance. It offers sharper lines and a more refined look, particularly when combined with consistent board layouts and controlled detailing.

Coatings on smooth timber will appear more even, but may require more regular maintenance depending on exposure.

Finish and Performance

While finish influences appearance, the underlying performance of the cladding is determined by the base material and coating system. Textures such as brushed finishes can improve coating absorption, while smoother finishes provide a more uniform visual result.

The appropriate finish will depend on the design intent, level of exposure and maintenance strategy.

We can advise on suitable finishes based on your project, timber selection and desired appearance. Samples are available to help visualise how each finish will look in practice.
